🏛️ A little test you can use when an architect ghosts you

Quick note before we jump in… I had big plans to have the Pre-Meeting Research System ready to launch this week for Black Friday. But, it’s running a little behind.

So, instead of rushing the thing, I want to make sure it’s fully ready for you. It'll be sometime soon (after Black Friday, but before Christmas). But, when I do launch it, it'll still have a great price for those who grab it early!

Alright! Now, onto this week’s newsletter…

So… Let’s say you had a great meeting with an architect last week.

They asked some smart questions. You showed them how your system solves a very real problem. You even made a few jokes poking fun at our industry that they laughed at. But now, all you’re getting is crickets.

You want to follow up without sounding like you’re chasing.

Here’s what you can do instead.

It’s not a script. It’s more like a filter… Or a sniff test.

Basically, I ask myself 4 questions before I hit send on any follow-up:

  1. Does the subject line speak to a real issue they’re thinking about right now?
  2. Do the first lines show I was actually listening? [Not just pitching?]
  3. Does the middle link my service to some future headache they’d rather avoid?
  4. And is the ask something so small and helpful it’d feel weird not to say yes?

That’s it.

If you can check those four boxes, you know your email has a real shot at cutting through the noise. Because it makes life easier for the architect.

And you might not always nail all four. Sometimes I think, “Ahhh… this one still sounds a bit me-focused.” So I might cut some of it.

But running it through that little filter can sharpens things. Fast.

Anyway! If you want the full version (with examples you can steal), just reply:

“Send me the filter.”

I’ll send over the cheat sheet I use myself.

And who knows… maybe your next email won’t get ghosted.

That's it for this week!

[I kept this one short, so those of us in the US can turn our focus to eating grimace proportions this week.]

Cheers to building more than just buildings, and see you next week,

Neil Sutton

The Monday Morning Building Product AdvisorIssue #111 Most reps I work with are busy. And as someone who’s spent decades on both sides of that relationship (as an architect and as a coach), I can tell you the busyness isn’t the issue. Tell me if this sounds about right: You take long drives each week to cover your territory. Your calendar is full. You’ve got CEU presentations scheduled 3 weeks out. But if we look closely at your territory, the same uncomfortable image would likely show up…...

The Monday Morning Building Product AdvisorIssue #110 While I was talking with a client last week, I shared this story. As I explored better ways to solve it, I found a pretty sweet framework to address it. Unfortunately, it’s stuck in my head, and I keep thinking about it, so I thought I oughta’ share it with you, too. Anyway! Let’s go to the background story… A rep I know [we’ll say he’s called “John”] lost a specification on a very nicely sized project last year. And it wasn’t because his...

The Monday Morning Building Product AdvisorIssue #109 About 6 years ago, this newsletter was in its wee early stages. I had a whopping 10 people signed up. [And 1 of them was me!] Back then, I wasn’t active on LinkedIn or any social media, so I was depending on someone stumbling across my website and signing up. [In other words, I didn’t know WTH I was doing.] And I eventually gave up and stopped writing those emails. But then, in early 2023, I took several courses and learned how to write...
